William Appleman Williams, an American historian, was known as the father of the "revisionist school" of American diplomatic history. Born in Atlantic, Iowa in 1921, he attended the United States Naval Academy and spent fifteen months as a naval officer in the Pacific during World War II. After the war, he enrolled in the history department at the University of Wisconsin and received his doctorate in 1950.
